From Linking experiences of World War One
Historian and palaeographer. I run Different Hand Ltd, doing manuscript transcription, XML markup, research assistance and related services. My PhD thesis and published work are on horses and cavalry in the English Civil War. I got into First World War research through tracing my great-grandad, who was in 1/5th Battalion Lincolnshire Regiment. I was a moderator at Your Archives and used to blog at Investigations of a Dog.
To do list
- import and test Wikipedia citation templates: imported and seem to be working. No performance problems even with 40 instances of {{Cite book}} per page. Still need to:
- find and import any missing templates required by Wikipedia documentation, or remove calls to templates that aren't needed here.
- categorise citation templates
- add links to FAQ and help
- update other Citation templates to pass data to Wikipedia templates
- add embarkation lists and various operational records to Official unit diaries and histories
- create pages for British divisional machine gun units
- British and Indian division pages:
- WO 95 sub-series for non-WF theatres
- WO 157 if any
- create/expand definition pages for types and specific types. Specific types still needed:
- cavalry squadron
- mounted division
- mounted infantry regiment
- record office
- cyclist battalion
- cyclist company
- horse artillery battery
- horse artillery brigade
- horse artillery ammunition column
- field artillery brigade
- light mortar battery
- medium mortar battery
- heavy mortar battery
- field ambulance
- mounted field ambulance
- expeditionary force
- army
- corps troops
- add more tasks to How you can help:
- highland, rifle, cyclist and pals battalions
- division-corps relationships
- regimental museums and archives
- IWM Lives communities
- yeomanry regiments converted to infantry or machine gun battalions
- improve type definition pages
- British Territorial battalions needing further disambiguation:
- AOs/Royal Warrants for MGC and Tank Corps:
- 1915/413 and 414
- 1916/253
- 1917/239 and 240
- look into replacing {{RefLives}} with a more general template to represent a person, link to any canonical source for their identity, and possibly insert microformats
- make some notes on how to represent ships
