- 13 September 1914: duplicated from 1/4th Battalion Lincolnshire Regiment, British infantry as 4th (Reserve) Battalion Lincolnshire Regiment (initially for home service and training replacements to be sent out to 1/4th)
- January 1915? renamed 2/4th Battalion Lincolnshire Regiment
- 1 June 1915: formed duplicate battalion 3/4th Battalion Lincolnshire Regiment, British infantry
- 30 January 1918: merged with part of 1/4th Battalion Lincolnshire Regiment, British infantry to form new 4th Battalion Lincolnshire Regiment, British infantry
