Historian and palaeographer. I run Different Hand Ltd, doing manuscript transcription, XML markup, research assistance and related services. My PhD thesis and published work are on horses and cavalry in the English Civil War. I got into First World War research through tracing my great-grandad, who was in 1/5th Battalion Lincolnshire Regiment. I was a moderator at Your Archives and used to blog at Investigations of a Dog.
To do list
- Australian CMF/PF units need linking to Army List
- started US and French divisions, corps and armies: get tactical relationships from US OB
- look for missing British infantry brigades in Becke and James
- look for missing Indian infantry in Army List and Wikipedia
- clear backlog of Australian personal narratives at Lists of personal diaries, letters, memoirs and Talk:Australian units in World War I (pages should now exist for most relevant units but check for and create any missing ones)
- VTC/VF battalions and regiments (need more AOs first)
- TF name histories (need more ACIs first)
- look into replacing {{RefLives}} with a more general template to represent a person, link to any canonical source for their identity, and possibly insert microformats
- look into using APIs to extract batches of personal narratives and media from major collections
- pals battalions need cat, redirects and name checks
- see how many IWM Lives communities need to be added to unit pages
- decide which tasks most need to be added to How you can help (too many/too complicated could be overwhelming)
- possible changes to infoboxes:
- moving refs into separate fields would make cleaner data, more future proof and maybe easier to use
- fields and categories to track completeness of pages eg are names/relationships complete, with exact dates and citations?
