An '''infantry brigade''' was a tactical formation with a headquarters, three or four [[infantry battalion]]s and sometimes some support units. The infantry battalions did not always belong to the same [[infantry regiment (administrative)|regiment]].

== British Empire ==

Brigades were similar in all forces of the British Empire. They usually had four battalions, but were reduced to three in early 1918. The surplus battalions were disbanded to reinforce other battalions. There were usually three brigades in each [[infantry division]] throughout the war, although the [[New Zealand Division]] sometimes had four.

A [[machine gun company]] was added to each brigade in early 1916. These were withdrawn in early 1918 and merged into a [[machine gun battalion]] attached to the headquarters of each division.

Every brigade had a [[trench mortar battery]] from 1916 until the end of the war.
