A '''record office''' was an administrative unit that kept personnel files (also known as service records), especially in the British regimental system. A soldier's service record would be kept at a home record office, but when serving in a theatre of war, a copy would be kept and updated at the 3rd echelon of the General Headquarters for that theatre, and later returned to the home record office.

== Australian Army ==

The Australian Imperial Force had one home record office covering all units. This record office is not currently represented at this site. [[Australian Naval and Military Expeditionary Force]] seems to have been administratively separate from the AIF at first, but it may have been covered by the same record office at some point, and its service records can now be found with the AIF service records.

We don't yet know anything about record-keeping arrangements for the Permanent Force or Citizen Military Force.

[[Infantry regiment (administrative)|Infantry regiments]] were grouped together under infantry record offices. These are shown as administrative parents in the command structure infoboxes on each regiment's page.

Cavalry regiments were grouped into [[corps (administrative)|administrative corps]] under cavalry record offices. Again, the administrative relationships are shown in the command structure infoboxes. The [[Household Cavalry, UK|Household Cavalry]] was an exception because each regiment had its own record office.

Most other [[corps (administrative)|administrative corps]] had their own record offices, which are usually shown on the corps page and not represented as a separate level.
