George Ashurst, 4202

He joined the Special Reserve before the First World War and was drafted into the Regular Army in August 1914, serving on the Western Front, including the Christmas truce and the first day of the Somme, at Gallipoli and in Egypt. He rose to the rank of sergeant and then became an officer cadet. He wrote detailed memoirs and gave a long interview to the Imperial War Museum:
- George Ashurst (edited Richard Holmes), My Bit: A Lancashire Fusilier at War 1914-18, (Marlborough, Crowood Press, 1987, reprinted 2007). ISBN 1852230126. According to th e introduction, this was mostly written in the 1920s.
- Imperial War Museum Sound Archive, catalogue number 9875: interview with George Ashurst recorded 1987. Can be played free of charge, and reused for non-commercial purposes.
