    • Infantry Regiment
  • British Infantry Regiment Number: 10

(British infantry regiments were known by numbers before 1881. After this date they were given names, and the numbers ceased to be part of their official title, but it can still be useful to know them for some WW1 era records.)

Name and Organisation Changes

(These dates are all well outside the scope of this project. There needs to be quick and standardised way of indicating that something existed before and/or after the First World War period.)

  • 1881: formed from 10th Regiment of Foot, renamed Lincolnshire Regiment
  • 1946: renamed Royal Lincolnshire Regiment
  • 1960: merged into Royal Anglian Regiment

Service Numbers

(Soldiers' service numbers were allocated at regiment level or below. Understanding service number sequences can give vital clues in reconstructing a soldier's career, especially when his service record has been destroyed, as 2/3 of British ones have.)
